LEAH KIRPALANI // SHOP GOOD

"EVEN AFTER SIFTING THROUGH COUNTLESS TRADITIONAL DOCTORS FROM MULTIPLE SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT, I RECEIVED ZERO ANSWERS. I WISHED FOR A PLACE WHERE I COULD GO TO SEEK ANSWERS... "

Leah Kirpilani, owner of Shop Good in North Park San Diego, is at the heart and soul of the non-toxic beauty industry. Growing from her own personal health journey, she has discovered a way not only to follow her passion, but to give back and influence others to explore and nourish their own health journey.

Shop Good is a brick and mortar Holistic Wellness Spa that offers everything from Nutrition Consultations and Facials, to Brow, Eyelash, and Waxing services. In addition to an array of holistic beauty options, there is an endless supply of non-toxic makeup and hygiene products for sale in the shop and online.

Encouraging concepts such as “Nourish and Beautify” and “Natural beauty is medicine”, Leah and her team are influencing an everlasting shift in the beauty industry, creating a community for healing, growing, learning, and allowing everyone to become the healthiest version of themselves.

SOUL SHAPERS: PLEASE GIVE US A QUICK BACKGROUND!
LEAH: I grew up in Tempe, Arizona and was lucky to be able to spend a lot of my childhood with my grandparents in Texas. I blame my grandmommy for my love of clothing and makeup. She had counters filled with cosmetics from Neimans, Saks and closets filled with power suits from Nordstrom and Bloomingdales - all the newest miracle creams, the brightest red lipsticks and the fanciest evening coats.

From then on, I was a product junkie at heart. I went to school for Retail and Business and had my sights set on working in the fashion industry. I feel so lucky to have followed through with that dream, but feel even more grateful that it led me to my chief calling in life, which is the intersection of beauty, wellness and fashion!

Although she is no longer with us, I think about my Grandmommy all of the time, and how she never left the house without a bright red lip - now my signature look!

SS: HOW DID YOUR HEALTH JOURNEY TRANSPIRE INTO A BUSINESS THAT IS MOTIVATED TO HELP OTHERS AND ENHANCE THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY TO THE HEALTHIEST VERSION IT CAN BE?
LEAH:
The heart of the brand is my own personal health journey. Right before beginning working at my dream job in Merchandising for Gap Corporate in San Francisco, I began to feel sicker each day and noticed many changes in my body. I gained a significant amount of weight, despite working out daily. My face became puffy and my acne was cystic and relentless. My hair became brittle and thin and I began losing it in chunks. My eyes burned, my abdomen bloated, my muscles ached, my face and skin constantly tingled and I went without having my period for years.
Even after sifting through countless traditional doctors from multiple schools of thought, I received zero answers. I wished for a place where I could go to seek answers, recommendations and tools to heal my body, and find people that could relate and understand me.

That is what I strive to provide at Shop Good every day. A safe space where our customers can share their wellness stories and be inspired by new ways of taking care of their bodies. The physical space also offers the opportunity for customers to come in and touch and try on our curated assortment of clean beauty and skincare products, which allows us to hold one-on-one conversations and personalize each of our customer’s beauty and skincare routine.

"WE LOVE CONNECTING WITH AND CHAMPIONING MAKERS, BOTANISTS AND CHEMISTS WHO HAVE A GREATER MISSION AND VISION..."

SS: WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF CHOOSING DIFFERENT COSMETIC LINES THAT YOU CARRY IN SHOP GOOD?
LEAH:
At Shop Good ingredients come first. We go line-item by line-item to ensure that every ingredient in each product is safe and non-toxic, yet effective and healing. We analyze this by using databases and partner closely with each and every vendor to understand their sourcing practices and intention behind the products they create. Secondary to this is brand story. We love connecting with and championing makers, botanists and chemists who have a greater mission and vision for the betterment of our health and wellbeing. Finally, we love a good-looking product! Packaging that stands out on our shelves and feels unique, special and fun definitely scores points with us!

SS: WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 REASONS THAT NONTOXIC MAKEUP BEAUTY AND SKINCARE IS SO IMPORTANT?
LEAH:

1. Our skin absorbs up to 65% of what we place on our bodies and the FDA does not regulate the ingredients that go into our face wash, balms, lipsticks or lotions. The icky consequence of that is there are more than 80,000 chemicals on our shelves today.
Over repeated periods of exposure to the harmful toxins and chemicals hidden in our everyday products can negatively impact the way our bodies function.

Now cancer rates, infertility, birth defects, and childhood brain disorders are on the rise.

2. Inflamed, acne-prone, dry or aging skin needs healing, nurturing and gentle TLC! Many mainstream or traditional skincare and beauty products contain chemicals that can actually damage our moisture barrier, throw our skin’s pH balance off and actually end up causing premature aging and more inflammation. Leaning on the power of plants to nourish the skin, combat fine lines and wrinkles and clear and brighten skin is a much safer (and more effective way!) to approach problematic skin.
3. Incorporating natural products into your morning and nighttime routine is an incredible way to practice self care! So often, we busy multi-tasking boss babes neglect to prioritize ourselves, and placing natural ingredients onto your skin each day is such a beautiful way to honor the body and nourish from the outside-in!

"It’s so exciting to see people today begin to investigate their personal care products the same way we look at the ingredients in our food."

SS: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU EXPERIENCED WITH TRANSITIONING FROM YOUR PREVIOUS JOB TO OPENING Shop Good AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
    LEAH:
Going from corporate life to solopreneur was not the smoothest transition. Since the brand began as a one-on-one health coaching company and online store, I was working alone at home all time time. I missed being a part of a team, having deadlines set for me and gaining feedback from my superiors. All of this called me to be diligent with my time management, goal setting and even carve out time for socialization and self care. Now that the brand has transitioned from online only into a busy brick and mortar store, it thrills me to be in shop where I can now interact with my team, my customers and the community. I think the key to overcoming any challenges when building a business is continually trying new processes on for size and paying attention to what environments and tasks light you up vs those that may drain you.

"LIVING WELL CAN ACTUALLY BE ACCESSIBLE, FABULOUS AND FUN. WE BELIEVE YOU CAN HAVE BOTH!"

SS: WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE MESSAGE AND MOTIVE YOU HOPE TO CONVEY TO YOUR CUSTOMERS AND FOLLOWERS?
LEAH: It took me a long time to learn how to balance the life I wanted to live while still placing my health as a priority, For so long I felt alienated, restricted and limited from doing and indulging in the things that I loved. But what I realized later, is that living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean we need to feel limited or restricted. Living well can actually be accessible, fabulous and FUN. We believe you can have both! -- You can live the life you dream of while still keeping your health in mind. And, you can use products that both heal and beautify -- free of harmful ingredients and downright effective!

SS: IF SOMEONE IS FEELING DISCOURAGED, HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE THEM TO GET THER SPARK BACK AND STAY CONFIDENT IN WHAT THEY ARE CREATING/DOING, OR FINDING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME?
LEAH: Keep your focus on your north star, or your ‘why’. There will be thousands of times the path of entrepreneurship will try and knock you out of the game. Refocusing on why I was doing the work helped to push me through the tough and even tougher times. Visualization can be really powerful here. Whether its a lucid memory of your ‘why’ - for example, a difficult experience associated with the problem you want to solve for others, or a vivid vision of what exactly what you want to create. Stay clear on what you want to create and why.
